This month’s positive point is about a couple who are committed to staying on track in their relationship.
This month’s positive point with a couple occurred when they came into my office for a maintenance session. This particular couple comes in every quarter just to make sure they stay on track in their relationship. The positive point for them was that they had had no major bumps in the road in the last 3 months. They attribute the decrease in contentious moments between them to their decision to check in with me 4 times per year.
When building new positive habits for your relationship, it’s easy to slip into old patterns. Having a regularly scheduled time to check in to make sure you are on track can make the difference between feeling successful or feeling frustrated about your marriage or relationship. Some of my work has to do with helping couples or individuals stay on a positive path and realizing that life is about progress rather than perfection.
Sometimes I’ll hear a couple or person say dejectedly, “We didn’t do the homework …” I always review the person or couple’s successes with them from the previous week and inevitably they discover they had, in fact, succeeded in one aspect or another.
Not only does the human brain tend to veer toward the negative, it is sometimes hard to be objective about our own accomplishments and see that we often succeed more than we realize!
