With summer trips and travel plans canceled due to COVID-19, this month’s Ask Coach Kathy provides a tip for handling the disappointment.
I am so bummed. My husband and I had a few trips planned for this summer and all are cancelled. How do you handle the disappointment of this happening? We feel like we have a huge void in our life.
I can completely relate. My husband and I travel a fair amount. It is one of our core values in life. When the pandemic hit, as with many people, our travels came to a screeching halt. We had 3 trips planned between May and August: a family wedding in Oregon, a trip to visit our sons in California, and a 75th birthday celebration for my husband in New York. As our travels faded away, we watched all the memories we would have made fade away, as well.
I don’t know about you, but I need something to plan, something to which I can look forward. So, we decided to start planning a milestone birthday celebration for me somewhere fun where we can meet our children in February of 2022. Will the pandemic be over by then? I hope so, but if it isn’t, we can adapt and adjust the celebration. We have plenty of time to figure out how to do that.
So my answer to this question is start planning! But make sure you have a Plan B adaptation as a back-up. Life is too short to wait for a pandemic to be over. With ingenuity, creativity, and persistence, we can still create joy during the virus!
