Fun with Maria and Josh Cribbs

Having opposing political views can make living under the same roof difficult.

Before the election, I was asked to appear on  WOIO Channel 19’s Cribbs in the CLE, hosted by former Cleveland Browns player, Josh Cribbs and his wife, Maria. This adorable, spunky couple wanted me to come on the show and talk about how a couple can maneuver living under the same roof with someone who has diametrically opposed political views.

The main takeaway from the segment was to understand that spending your life with someone who has different opinions than you is a good thing! The key is to be able to allow each other to express those views and decide to agree to disagree and let it go.

Having said that, political views are often attached to personal values. It is extremely important that, although you don’t need to agree on political views, you also want to refrain from compromising your own values.  For example, if your mate doesn’t believe in climate change and you do, it’s okay for you to make different lifestyle decisions that reflect your values.

I’m a big believer that we are individuals before we are a couple. And holding onto our individual values so that we bring the best person we can be to the relationship is critical.

In short, you can be true to yourself and still be true to your relationship!
