Core memories can remind you of your emotional connection.
Sometimes in a marriage or relationship, a couple can have a memory of something they experienced together that brought them emotionally close. A reminder of that experience can do the same thing – make an emotional connection between them again.
This happened to me and my husband recently. We were taking our dog, Nellie, for a check-up with the vet. When we entered the lobby, there was a sign lit up that said, “Please speak softly. Someone is saying goodbye.”
Dick and I looked at one another, and a flashback of putting down our precious dog, Rosie, hit us at the same time. Both of our hearts squeezed from the memory of that really difficult morning.
We took Nellie into the examining room just at the time that someone was having their cat put down. The sobs of grief and unconsolable pain triggered memories in both of us. We were pretty much a wreck during Nellie’s examination.
As soon as we got back to our car, we debriefed on our feelings and memories of letting Rosie go. It was a needed sharing of feelings from that memory, and we both felt so close to one another.
If you are looking for ways to start the connections in your relationship but are running into roadblocks, get in touch, and we can talk about some strategies.
