In my coaching practice, I am forever talking about the importance of self-love. Learning how to take care of yourself on a fundamental level is critical. By on a fundamental level I mean are you taking care of your most basic needs. For example, how are you moving your body, what are you putting in your mouth, and are you sleeping enough? By taking care of your body’s needs, your emotional needs, mental needs, and spiritual needs, you will bring the best you possible to your relationship.
Unfortunately, sometimes people confuse basic needs with selfish needs. This shows up as “I want what I want when I want it and I expect you to provide what I want.” That kind of attitude comes from ego rather than love. When we operate out of ego in a relationship, we become self-absorbed – not a great basis for a healthy relationship!
