Are you financially open with your partner?
This month’s positive point in my work with a couple happened around the topic of finances. A former spouse of my client had not been honest around his finances. She had trusted her husband and was devastated to find out important information had been withheld from her for years, thereby leaving her guarded and distrustful in her current relationship, even though nothing similar has happened.
For years in this couple’s current relationship, they have not broached the topic of each other’s finances. However, recently, the partner with trust issues has made a baby step to be willing to have a full-disclosure financial conversation between her and her mate.
Whenever there has been a small, medium, or large level of trauma around a certain topic in a relationship, it doesn’t take a lot to trigger anxiety and fear when the topic is broached. It’s important to take it slowly when this happens. This inch-by-inch pace pays off as the trust between people begins to build.
