A truly amazing life experience.
About a year and a half ago, a couple was referred to me for relationship coaching, prior to getting married. We spent 12 weeks together as I coached them how to use 35 tools to strengthen and maintain their relationship. At the second to last of our sessions, this couple asked me if I’d be willing to officiate their marriage. “Really?” I said. And they responded with, “We can’t think of anyone else who knows us in the way you do. Yes, we’d like you to marry us!”
I was blown away by being asked to participate in their wedding as their officiant. What an incredible honor.
So, on April 23rd, I facilitated their wedding and included my reflections of this couple and their relationship in the ceremony. I invited the 150 family members and friends to take a peek through the same lens through which I had seen this couple over the 12 weeks we had worked together. I shared their values, goals, and some of the touching things they had done for one another with some of the homework they were assigned.
The wedding and reception, held at Windows on the River in the Flats of downtown Cleveland, was a beautiful affair, …and one I will remember always.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was when the groom’s son and I performed a hand fasting for this couple. Their son wrapped their hands together while each attendant read a blessing for the couple. What a precious moment.
To officiate this couple’s wedding was truly a peak-life experience for me.
