This month’s positive point with a couple revolved around a change in the wife’s awareness of her own behavior choices.
She has a habit of blaming, yelling, name-calling, and swearing at her husband. This woman came to the sessions not proud of her behavior but had no clue how to change it.
I tell my clients the only way to change a negative habit is to first be aware of it. The awareness phase happens over time, but once it kicks in, the person is prepared to make different choices in his/her tone volume, and vocabulary, and it can make all the difference in the world.
As the wife became more and more aware of her behavior toward her husband, she began to use those negative habits less and less. We are at a point in our work together where she is learning to replace her negative habits with positive ones that allow her to express her feelings, but without berating her husband. It’s a beautiful thing!
