This Skill in Your Relationship is More About Action Than Atmosphere

Can simple acts of love redefine romance in your relationship?

“I’m Just Not Romantic.”

Some people carry a story in their heads that they are just not romantic. You may be one of those people.

When I work with a couple, we work on the department of romance in their marriage or relationship.

I give each person a romance survey that asks questions to help them define what romance means to them, as individuals. After each partner fills out the survey, we discuss their answers.

The information they gather from one another has a lot to do with the nuts and bolts of romance, things like most romantic song, most romantic movie, or most romantic getaway. All of the information they learn from one another is certainly valuable. I end the discussion by explaining that the best thing each person can do for the other isn’t about the details, but rather initiating whatever is done.

Initiating (anything) = romance!

When someone initiates a loving gesture, organizes quality time together, creates or buys a thoughtful gift, gives a loving, verbal message, etc. the other person feels he or she matters, that he or she is a priority. Now that’s romance!
