Your bedtime habits can affect your relationship.
You and your mate have a vertical life and a horizontal life. Stick with me on this.
Your vertical life together involves all the activities you are involved in when you are sitting, standing, or moving in some way – things like eating, doing chores, working inside or outside of the home, driving, etc.
But then you and your mate also have a horizontal life. This life starts as soon as you both get into bed together. How you relate to one another as you sleep (or in some cases don’t sleep) can promote closeness or put a wedge between you.
Here is a list of some situations that can do anything but promote your horizontal relationship; see if you can relate to any of these:
- You or your mate are on a device that has a glowing, bright light shining next to the other person while one of you is attempting to fall asleep.
- One of you snores. No explanation needed.
- One of you “creeps.” That person tends to inch his/her way across the bed throughout the night until the other is close to having a face plant.
- One of you is a blanket hogger, leaving the other waking up shivering in the middle of the night.
- One or both of you get up multiple times a night to use the bathroom.
- You co-sleep with one or more of your children.
- You keep your phone on all night to hear the ding of a text or ringing in case you get a phone call.
- One or more pets are in bed with you.
Anyone who has been coached by me knows I am a huge proponent of sleep.
It’s a basic and essential need that if not met, will mess big time with you and your relationship. When one of my clients tells me he/she has been snippy, the first think I ask is if they are sleeping well.
If you and your mate have not done an assessment of your horizontal life lately or at all, now is the time to do it!
